Day 22: Save me, O my God!

Read: Psalm 3

There are seasons of life where it feels like everything is pushing against us. We feel overwhelmed by troubles and it seems as if nothing is going right. There are times we feel weak and our relationship with God is beaten down and attacked. Sometimes seasons come where we feel so far from God that we feel alone. I can remember a few times in my life like this. Unfortunately, this is something that we all experience and will probably experience again.

Psalm 3 is one of the many Psalms by David. This one specifically was written in a time of distress after he was driven out of his kingdom by his son Absalom (2 Sam. 15-18).

Psalm 3:1-2 says, “O Lord, how many are my foes! Many are rising against me;many are saying of my soul, ‘There is no salvation for him in God.’” David is proclaiming that many are against him; I’m sure that we have all felt something like that at a point in our life. Then David changes gears and remembers who God is. Psalm 3:3 says,  “But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory and the lifter of my head.” David is reminding himself of who God is.

David continues in this Psalm to praise God for who He is. He says in verse 4, “I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy hill.” God answers us. He cares deeply about His children. He goes on to remember God’s sustenance in verse 5, “I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.” God will sustain us in these times of overwhelming trouble and weakness. With David’s change in gears from verses 1-2, we see that even when we feel far from God, He remains with us.

During these times where it seems that everything is pushing against us, God will carry us through difficult seasons. Verse 7 says, “Arise, O Lord! Save me, O my God! For you strike all my enemies on the cheek; you break the teeth of the wicked.” David is proclaiming that God will protect him and bring him out of this stressful period.

A lot of times when we feel far from God and we feel like no one is for us, it is important for us to remember who God is just as David did. In times when I feel weak and it seems that no one is on my side, it’s hard to remember God for who He is and praise Him for carrying me through the valleys of life. In these seasons of stress, it is important to remember to be thankful to God for sustaining us and to be thankful that He is for us.

Spend some time in prayer today, thanking God for bringing you through difficult seasons in your life. If you are in one of those seasons right now spend time remembering who God is and how He will carry you through.
